Hey Elizabeth,

At my co-op, there is a little scale where you can weigh your jars and other containers, and stickers so you can write the weight. Then at the register they will tare that weight so you aren’t charged for it. Actually, when I bought all this stuff, the sticker for the vanilla had fallen off, so we just estimated the tare weight based on containers I had of a similar size & shape. I would assume most places that sell in bulk work this way!

I always buy in bulk, and also save my jars, but usually just use them for spouting or containers. My question for you is-do you weigh the jars before you go to checkout? Or do you just include the wt in your bulk price? Or is there someway the cashier can negate (tare) the wt of the jar? I’ve always wondered this….

Awesome! I’ve been buying in bulks as well, especially grains and beans. I love to soak my own beans nowadays. Don’t like the can versions anymore.

janet, i just read your guest post on tina’s blog, and i loved it! i’m a total jar-saver, too. my roommates want to kill me because of our big jar tower, but it’s so much better for the food and the environment to reuse the glass than to be getting more plastic all the time! i’m super excited to keep reading your blog. i have a feeling that you’ll have lots of great tips i can use!
