And I Quote…

I just read this quote in Whole Living: Body and Soul, (a great magazine with tons of green and healthy living tips) and it really struck me.

“People complain about the price of eggs that could stretch a week but don’t blink at paying $5 for a latte that lasts 10 minutes.”Nicolette Hahn Niman

It’s so true. It’s all about your priorities. Good food that is grown sustainably, animals that are treated well and not tortured and living in filth during their short lives, pesticide-free, natural foods – they’re all worth the price. At least to me. I’d way rather give up other things so I can afford to buy the food and other products that are important to me.

What are you willing to pay more for? Have you made any trade-offs so you can afford to buy these things?

I’m a Green Motherf’er

Last night, I went to an awesome Kick Off Party for my friends Jaime and Chris, who are leaving for their 6-week Wedding Road Trip on Friday. It was a fabulous party, with 80s music, Pop Rocks, 16 Candles on the projector and hilarious road trip vows. Check out her site if you haven’t before – the two of them are about to embark on a cross-country trip filled with local food, good friends and hopefully not too many arguments! ;) Also, they met in line for a Port-o-Potty, which has to be the most romantic “we met because we had to pee” story ever.

Check out my friend’s awesome 80s jacket and sunglasses. They’re vintage – actually from the 80s! ;)

Anyway, while at the party, I had this conversation, and it cracked me up. Drunk Guy, if you’re reading, I’m sorry for calling you Drunk Guy. You were quite entertaining, though!

Drunk Guy: So, green girl (a friend had mentioned my blog), what can I do right now to be more green?

Me: Well, one thing you could do is to not buy things. Just reduce, buy less. Or if you need to buy stuff, buy used.

Drunk Guy: I don’t buy anything. I just find s**t on the side of the road. I’m a GREEN MOTHERF****R.

Heh.

BlogHer Food ‘09 & Winners!

Hey all!

My apologies for not announcing the WholeSoy contest winners sooner! I totally forgot that Monday was a holiday when I set up the contest. Anyway, I’ll get to the winners in just a moment, but first….

BHFood09MastheadPost

I just bought my ticket for BlogHer Food ‘09, and am so excited! I was hoping to attend the regular BlogHer conference, but it was all sold out by the time I got around to it. But BlogHer Food is not only less expensive, it’s also in my city! I first heard about it when Tina said she was going, and I knew I had to attend. Is anyone else going? I’d love to meet any of you who will be attending, and organize a reader meet-up, and maybe a run or even some tours of San Francisco – I love showing people around! If anyone has any questions about SF at all, please ask! It’s one of the greatest cities ever, in my opinion. ;)

What Have You Given Up?

***Have you entered the WholeSoy & Co giveaway yet? Get your entry in to win free soy yogurt & fro yo!***

I was watching Oprah last night and the topic was “What Can You Live Without?” I only watched the first few minutes and am saving the rest to watch later (man, I love TiVo), but it got me thinking about what I can and do live without and have given up for environmental, health, ethical and other reasons. Some things have been harder than others – bananas, for example, which I’ve (somewhat guiltily) started to incorporate back occasionally. Coffee, tea, coconut and chocolate are all staples in my life, and I can’t give them up completely, but I do look for organic, fair trade, shade-grown, sustainable, and all the other green buzzwords. Other things have been easy – using a Sigg water bottle instead of bottled water, walking or taking the bus or working from home when I can (I still have a car but would LOVE to get rid of it some day), ditching high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners. I’m trying to cut back on individually packaged items, and need to work on some recipes to better replicate my favorite bars. I also try to buy meat that is sustainably and humanely raised, though this can be quite difficult at times and I’ve actually been tossing around the idea of cutting back on meat a bit. It’s not always being “pretty green,” but I feel good when I make these choices!

And now, on a totally unrelated note, a picture from my friend’s wedding last weekend. Wait! I think this demonstrates that I can’t give up champagne (though it was a delicious semi-local one). I’m in the middle. :)

What have you given up for environmental, health, ethical, etc. reasons? Are there any things you’d like to give up but just haven’t been able to yet? What could you never give up?

What a great company with such nice people. I already LOVE their products and this just makes me want to buy them even more (and tell everyone I know to do the same!).

Neighborhood Fruit

Greetings, friends! I’m off celebrating my friend’s wedding, so I scheduled this post in advance!

neighborhood fruit

My coworker sent me this awesome article this week about a website called Neighborhood Fruit. Neighborhood Fruit connects people with fruit trees with their neighbors who want to eat said fruit! Talk about eating local! Users are currently able to register their trees and find public trees in their area, and will soon be able to search to find neighbors with available fruit. I’ve already found a few nearby fig trees and cherry plums that I will definitely be checking out!

As the article mentioned, it’s still in beta, but I’ve registered and will definitely be keeping my eye on the site. What a great idea!

Wedding Bells!

I just woke up at 4am and got a calf cramp a few minutes later. Ick! Guess those bananas I traded in for this week didn’t do me much good. Grr! Sad banana, indeed! Funny story: my sister and I were Facebook IMing the other day and I mentioned that I was tired. She says, “have some coffee” and then goes, “wait, have a banana.” Ha, totally made me laugh.

I’m headed up to Sonoma first thing this morning (yes, I’m still awake at 5am, not sure if going back to sleep is going to happen) for the wedding of one of my closest friends, Jen. We’ve known each other since middle school and found each other again (yay, social networking!) when I moved back up here almost 3 years ago. The wedding weekend is kicking off with a bang today – carpooling (of course!), mani/pedis, picnic lunch with all the girls and private wine tasting. I can’t wait! And the wedding itself is going to be absolutely amazing, with gourmet food (hello, Michelin star!), fabulous drink (this couple knows their wine!), a stunning location and a gorgeous bride! Not to be too sappy, but I am just so thrilled for my friend and can’t wait to share her big day!

Check out this gorgeous setting!

Pretty sweet, right? I can’t wait!

PS: Happy, happy birthday to my roommate, Jaime! Her Wedding Road Trip kicks off in just 15 days! I’m happy to say she is not just my roommate but also a great friend, confidante and sounding board. I’ll miss her a lot while she’s on the trip, but can’t wait to hear and read all about it. Have an awesome birthday, roomie!

PPS: I scheduled a few fun posts for the weekend, including a cool coupon, so make sure to stop by!

Whole Soy & Co: I’m in Love!

Though I love tofu, I’ve never been a big fan of soy milk. At least not of Silk, or the unsweetened kind from Trader Joe’s. Just not my thing. I’ve tried a few different soy frozen yogurts, and found them to have that same funky taste I think soy milk has. Until I discovered the perfection that is Whole Soy & Co. frozen yogurt.

wholesou

I was first drawn in by their Chocolate Hazelnut flavor, and OMG, this stuff is good. It has an absolutely amazing flavor and only 120 calories and 2.5 grams of fat per serving. I have a container of their Swiss Dark Chocolate at home right now, taunting me as I try to cut a little bit back on sugar this week. We’ll see how that goes. ;) I had some the other night and it seriously was better than some full-fat ice creams I’ve had. A few weeks ago, I had some of the Mocha Fudge, and later that night, I was literally so happy that I wasn’t sure if I could sleep. I don’t know if it was the caffeine or what, but seriously, I was giddy. I had a small scoop in my coffee the next morning (hey, people put cream and sugar in their coffee, right?) and I was totally in love with life that day, too. I don’t know if I can account it all to the frozen yogurt, but I think I will so I can eat it more often. :) They have a few other delicious-sounding flavors – Vanilla Bean, Crème Caramel and Black Cherry – and their products are certified vegan, Kosher and dairy-, casein- and gluten-free. I have yet to try their soy yogurts, but I definitely plan to in the near future, especially after learning more about the company.

Whole Soy & Co. is locally based here in SF, but that’s not the only that makes them pretty green. Check out their Sustainability Statement for some amazing facts about what they’re doing!

Some highlights:
* They are independently-owned
* Their products are certified organic
* They source their fruit locally
* They pay livable wages
* They encourage their employees to take public transit (and almost all of them do!)
* They give back to the community
* They source their sugar and cocoa from socially and economically responsible cooperatives
* They participate in a CSA
*They got rid of their plastic lids to keep them out of the waste stream, but will send you one if you want to reuse your yogurt cup (which I recommend you do!)

There are too many wonderful things to list here, so please take a look at their website, and definitely try their products if you see them in stores!

A socially and environmentally responsible company that makes an outstanding product? I’m in love!

I Gave Peas a Chance…

And they exploded all over the microwave. Keep reading for the details. ;)

Seriously, though, I got a bunch of fresh peas from my CSA last week, and have made some absolutely delicious meals with them. Despite what some of my friends say (ahem, Jaime C. and Bethany), fresh peas are so delicious, especially with asparagus in a “cream” sauce, or in a walnut “peasto.”

Pea and Asparagus Cream Sauce
This was so good, I made it two nights in a row. The second night, I sauteed red and orange bell peppers in with the asparagus. Also a winner. YUM!

You need:
Shallots
Leeks (you could use either/or but I like both)
Asparagus
Peas
Olive oil
Cream cheese
Butter
Milk
Parmesan (optional)

Wash asparagus and trim woody ends. Cut each spear into two or three pieces. Sautee in olive oil until they begin to soften, then add shelled fresh peas, until they begin to soften as well. Do not overcook, as you will be letting them simmer in the sauce later, but make sure they aren’t too raw either.

In another pan, sautee sliced leeks and shallots (to taste – I like a LOT) in a dab of butter until they begin to become translucent. Add a large spoonful or two of cream cheese, stirring or whisking until melted, then add approx. 1/2 cup milk (I used 1%). Whisk until sauce is smooth, then add asparagus & peas and let simmer. Add parmesan if desired. If the sauce starts to thicken while you are waiting for the rest of your meal to be ready, add a little more milk, heat and whisk.

Serve over a chicken breast. I like to sear it for a minute or two on each side, and then stick the whole pan in the oven at 400 degrees, for about 20 minutes, depending on the thickness of the breast. I’m sure it would be delicious over pasta as well. Seriously, the combo of asparagus + cream (or milk, as the case may be) + peas cannot be beat!

Walnut Cream “Peasto”
My friend Jen once watched an episode of Rachael Ray where she made a pea pesto and could not stop saying “peasto.” “It’s like a pesto… with peas! Peasto! Get it?” We get it, Rachael. Anyway, I looked up the recipe and didn’t have any of the basic ingredients on hand, so I just kind of winged it. I wanted to use pecans, but am all out – must have been that last batch of pecan butter. So walnuts it was! I also decided to make this a creamy pesto at the last minute.

You need:
Handful walnuts (could prob sub in pecans or another nut. Pine nuts would be great, too)
Shelled peas (about 1/4 cup)
Olive oil
Leeks/shallots
Cream cheese
Milk

To cook the peas, after shelling, I put them in a little water, and microwaved for a minute. This is where the explosion came in! They were popping like popcorn after only about thirty seconds. So, beware: cover the dish or cook for a shorter period of time!

In food processor, blend until combined but still slightly chunky:
Peas, cooked
Handful walnuts
Glug of olive oil

In a pan, sautee leeks and shallots in olive oil, add a spoonful of cream cheese until melted, then add milk (this is similar to the cream sauce above, but I used oil instead of butter, and smaller portions).

Combine “peasto” and cream sauce.

I enjoyed this over organic garlic-gorgonzola ravioli, but bet it would be delicious over chicken or fresh fish.

As you can see, my recipes are not exact. I like to taste and add – the only problem is when you find that perfect combination, you might not remember exactly what was in it!
